Arbor Day in Illinois: How to Celebrate & Why Trees Matter in Our Community

Happy Arbor Day (1)

Each spring, Arbor Day reminds us of the essential role trees play in our lives and communities. Here in Illinois, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April, when schools, municipalities, and local organizations come together to promote tree planting, care, and conservation. Whether you’re a long-time tree lover or just starting to branch out, Arbor Day Illinois is the perfect opportunity to get involved in activities that leave a lasting impact.

The Roots of Arbor Day

Arbor Day has its roots in the American frontier, where pioneers settling the Great Plains quickly realized the need for trees to provide windbreaks, fuel, building materials, and shade. The first Arbor Day was held in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, spearheaded by journalist and tree advocate J. Sterling Morton. Over one million trees were planted during that first celebration—a powerful testament to the importance of trees in shaping both landscapes and livelihoods. The idea quickly took root and spread across the country.

In Illinois, Arbor Day found early champions in educators and conservationists who recognized the value of trees in urban spaces and schoolyards. In fact, one of the first recorded Arbor Day celebrations in Illinois took place in the 1880s in small towns like Quincy and Jacksonville, where schoolchildren planted trees to beautify their campuses and honor local heroes. That tradition of civic pride and environmental stewardship still thrives today. Arbor Day in Illinois continues this legacy, bringing communities together each spring to celebrate tree planting, community care, and lasting conservation.

Why Trees Matter in Our Community

Trees are more than just landscaping features—they’re a crucial part of our local ecosystem. In suburban and urban areas across Illinois, urban tree planting helps reduce stormwater runoff, lower energy costs by providing shade, and improve mental health by adding natural beauty to everyday life. Community tree care initiatives strengthen neighborhoods, enhance public spaces, and foster a deeper appreciation for the environment.

But trees are also under threat. Invasive pests, severe weather, soil compaction, and development can all reduce tree health and lifespan. That’s why Arbor Day Illinois is about more than planting new trees—it’s about nurturing the ones we already have and investing in long-term tree conservation efforts.

Arbor Day Activities You Can Join

Looking to get involved? There are plenty of Arbor Day activities across Illinois that welcome volunteers and tree enthusiasts of all ages:

  • Tree Planting Events: Many local park districts and conservation organizations host public tree planting events on or around Arbor Day. Grab a shovel, bring your gloves, and plant a tree that could live for generations.
  • School Programs: Arbor Day is a great educational opportunity. Schools often host assemblies, art contests, or outdoor learning days focused on trees and the environment.
  • Community Tree Care Days: Help maintain existing trees in your neighborhood by mulching, pruning, or cleaning up green spaces. These events are often organized by municipalities or local tree boards.
  • Tree Walks and Guided Tours: Learn more about local tree species and how to care for them with guided walks led by arborists or naturalists.
  • Tree Giveaways: Some towns and villages offer free saplings to residents to encourage urban tree planting on private property.

Check with your city, township, or local forest preserve district to see what Arbor Day Illinois activities are happening near you.

Homer Tree came out and took down ten- 100+ ft tall Red Oaks lost to Oak Wilt and then took all the stumps out. They were very professional and skilled. Despite our greenhouse under the trees they did zero damage to anything with all of their large trucks and high work dropping massive logs. The price was amazing and they beat 4 other companies and even solo jobbers by thousands. I recommend them highly.

We had considerable storm damage from the June 6th storm. We lost 4 trees plus damage to many others. Not only did Homer Companies give us a great price to remove all the damaged trees and grind the stumps, the work was performed quickly and thoroughly. The Homer "team" was very easy to work with and went beyond expectations to address all of our concerns.
